Thank you, Scott, and a huge thank you to Lincoln Brewster for our intro music, “Love the Lord”.

The primary focus of Eternal Promises which is our foundational eternal promise is found in 1 John 2:25 which say that “THIS is the promise God has promised us, even Eternal Life!”

But today we are going to focus on the eternal promise that declares the Christ, the Messiah, Jesus, would be born in Bethlehem:

But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are no poor relation—for from your people will come a Ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel (Matthew 2: 6, Micah 5:2)

Old Testament Prophecy – Micah 5:2

But you, Bethlehem of Ephrathah, of the clans of Judah, are no poor relation—From your people will come a Ruler who will be the shepherd of My people, Israel, Whose origins date back to the distant past, to the ancient days

New Testament Fulfillment – Matthew 2:1-6

1 Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, in the province of Judea, at the time when King Herod reigned. Not long after Jesus was born, magi, wise men or seers from the East, made their way from the East to Jerusalem. These wise men made inquiries.

Wise Men: 2 Where is this newborn, who is the King of the Jews? When we were far away in the East we saw His star, and we have followed its glisten and gleam all this way to worship Him.

3 King Herod began to hear rumors of the wise men’s quest, and he, and all of his followers in Jerusalem, were worried. 4 So Herod called all of the leading Jewish teachers, the chief priests and head scribes, and he asked them where Hebrew tradition claimed the long- awaited Anointed One would be born.

Scribes and Priests: 5 An ancient Hebrew prophet, Micah, said this: 6 “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are no poor relation—for from your people will come a Ruler who will be the shepherd of My people Israel.”

— OT Prophecy

Malachi 3:1

“Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come into His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, whom you desire. Behold, He is coming,” says the Lord Almighty

Isaiah 40:3

The voice of one crying in the wilderness :“Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight the paths of our God”

— NT Fulfillment

Mark 1:1-3

1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in the Prophets: “Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.” 3 “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; Make His paths straight. ’”

Zech 9:9

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Proclaim it aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King comes to you; He is righteous and saving; He is gentle and mounted upon a donkey, even a young foal”

Matthew 21:1-9

1 Now when they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them and bring them to Me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

4 All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 5 “Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King is coming to you, Lowly, and sitting on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey. ’”

6 So the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them. 8 And a very great multitude spread their clothes on the road; others cut down branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying:

“Hosanna to the Son of David!

‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! ’ Hosanna in the highest”

Psalm 40:10 LXX (41:9 Masoretic)

“For even the man of my peace, in whom I hoped, He who ate my bread, dealt deceptively with me”

Luke 22:20-22

Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed”

Zechariah 11:12

And I shall say to them, “If it is fitting in your judgment, give me my payment, or refuse it.” And they established my wage at thirty pieces of silver.

Matthew 26:14-16

Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. 16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him

ODDS OF FULFILLMENT: 1 x 10(3rd) or 1 in 1,000

— 6 – 30 pieces of silver casted down and used to buy a potter’s field —

Zechariah 11:13 (NKJV)

And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—that princely price they set on me. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord for the potter.

3 Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!” 5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.

6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.

9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10 and gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me

NOTE: Why does Matthew cite Jeremiah, and not Zechariah? Because Jeremiah was the head of the minor prophets. He’s citing that it is coming from the book of prophets, not specifically from Jeremiah, although there are two verses that could be used to draw a similar concept.

Isaiah 53:7

Although He was ill- treated, He opened not His mouth. He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before his shearers, so He opens not His mouth

Mark 14: 57-61

57. Then some rose up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 58 “We heard Him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands. ’” 59 But not even then did their testimony agree.

60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 61 But He kept silent and answered nothing

Psalm 21:1-19 (22:16 Mas)

O God, my God, hear me; why have You forsaken me? The words of my transgressions are far from my salvation.

8 All who see me mock me; They speak with their lips and shake their head, 9 Saying, “He hoped in the Lord, let Him rescue him; Let Him save him since He delights in him.”

15 I am poured out like water, And all my bones are shattered; My heart is like wax, melting into my stomach. 16 My strength is dried up like an earthen vessel; My tongue cleaves to my throat; And You led me into the dust of death. They pierced my hands and my feet.

18 I numbered all my bones, And they look and stare at me. 19 They divided my garments among themselves, And for my clothing they cast lots

John 19: 17- 24

17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 18 where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.

19 Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was:

20 Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but, ‘He said, “I am the King of the Jews.” ’”

22 Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24

They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

“They divided My garments among them,

And for My clothing they cast lots”

So, what is the probability of one man fulfilling all eight prophecies – prophecies historically verifiably written and recorded hundreds and thousands of years BEFORE Christ was born?

To get that answer we need to multiply all eight probabilities together (1 times 2.8 x 105 x 103 x 102 x 103 x 103 x 105 x 103 x 104) which gives us 2.8 x 10(28th), or for to further simplify 1 x 10(28th) or 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (a 10 with 27 zeroes behind it). The American name for that number is Ten octillion.

So even using the mathematical science of probabilities, Jesus is proclaimed Lord and Messiah!

And that’s a Word of Promise today from Eternal Promises. I’m Jeff Tobler, and I want to encourage you to seek the Lord while He may be found, because if you seek Him with all of your heart, the promise of God is that you will find Him.

This is Jeff Tobler, and the Lord bless you richly!
