Apostle John

Apostle John was one of the twelve original apostles of Jesus. Called with his brother, James, while mending their nets, they “Left the boat and their father, and followed Him”. John followed the Lord faithfully, choosing to obey God rather than the will of men.(Acts 4:19-20)

John is famous for leaning against Jesus at the last supper, witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain, and was among the three apostles to accompany Jesus when He prayed in gethsemane. John was also there at the foot of the cross with Jesus’ mother, Mary, as Jesus died.

John is know for miraculously surviving martyrdom: He was boiled in oil in a Roman colosseum, but suffered no harm. He was afterward exiled to the isle of Patmos. During his exile to Patmos, John received the Revelation of Jesus Christ. According to church tradition, John was the only apostle to die a natural death, sometime after AD 98.

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Apostle Peter

Apostle Peter, also known as “Simon Peter” or “Cephas”, was one of the original 12 apostles of Jesus. We only have two recorded writings from Peter, the 1st and 2nd epistles of Peter, though we have recordings of him in the gospels and in the book of Acts. Peter was the first to share the gospel with the Gentiles(Acts 10), when he was called to give the message to Cornelius and his household. Peter was a man of great faith, and spent his life feeding Christ’s lambs, as he was asked by Jesus to do.(John 21:15)

According to church tradition, Peter went boldly to his death, just as Jesus had prophesied(John 21:18). Jerome States, “at Nero’s hands Peter received the crown of martyrdom being nailed to the cross with his head towards the ground and his feet raised on high, asserting that he was unworthy to be crucified in the same manner as his Lord.”

For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

The apostle Paul

We first hear of the apostle Paul as “Saul”, when he consented to the martyr Stephen’s death.(Acts 7:58) Paul did not start out a fervent believer. No, he was a fervent persecutor of christians, dragging them to prison. After receiving letters from the high priest, allowing him to bring back believers from Damascus, he set out on the road to Damascus. 

On the way there, The Lord showed up to Saul.(Acts 9) The Lord asked Saul why he was persecuting him. Saul, trembling, replied “Who are you, Lord?” The Lord replied, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads.” Saul asked what The Lord wanted him to do. The Lord told him to go into the city, and “You will be told what you must do.” Saul rose up blind, and they led him by the hand to Damascus.

While in Damascus, The Lord sent a man to heal Saul, and Saul was baptized. Saul immediately started preaching Christ to the Jews! Later, Saul changed his name to Paul. Paul traveled to many Gentile cities, preaching the gospel, casting out demons, healing the sick, and caring for those around him. 

Paul wrote much of the new testament. And because of his earlier training under Gamaliel, a respected jewish scholar, Paul was able to converse with everyone: from philosophers and kings to ordinary common people.

Near the end of his life on this earth, Paul was falsely accused by his fellow Jews during a trip to Jerusalem, which led to him being imprisoned, and ultimately, sent to Rome for trial before Caesar. While in Rome, Paul was able to minister, and preach, just as God had promised him.(Acts 23:11) Paul was sentenced to death and beheaded, not long after he wrote these words: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
